
On Saturday afternoon, No.3 New Mexico Military Institute extended their win streak to 10 in a row with a comeback 3-2 win over No. 11 Odessa College. Picking up their first conference home win at the Cahoon Armory Gym, the Broncos improve to 16-2 on the year.
Set 1
The Broncos opened the game on an 8-1 run in the first set before forcing an Odessa timeout. After trailing initially, Odessa turned the set around going on their own run to tie the set at 10. Jumping back in the driver's seat, the Broncos were able to take a 19-14 lead as Allison Miller tallied one of her kills in the afternoon. Odessa fought back to tie the set at 21. After a tie, Odessa was able to take the first set 25-21.
Set 2
NMMI earned the first point of the set but both teams would set the tone in the next few points. No side was able to take a clear advantage as the score stayed within a couple of points throughout the set. After trailing early in the set, the Broncos regained the lead with the help of back-to-back service aces by Dilean Bounds to make it a 13-12 game. A few points later, the game was knotted at 16 before Odessa ended the set on a 8-4 run to secure the second set 25-20.
Set 3
Down two sets, the Broncos started the comeback by stealing the first point of the third set. NMMI took an early 4-1 lead as Selin Guler recorded one of her 17 kills in the match. Mirroring the first two sets, both teams traded points until the tenth point. The next play, Allison Miller smashed a ball over the net to give NMMI the 11-10 lead - from which they never looked back. The Broncos took the sweep opportunity away from Odessa, closing out the set on a 14-7 run to take the third set 25-18.
Set 4
Using momentum from the third set, the Broncos jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. Eager for the win, Odessa battled back to take the lead 7-6. Down one, NMMI sparked their comeback opportunity as they secured a 5-point advantage to force an Odessa timeout. Up 15-11, the Broncos used the slight lead to extend the match. Every point Odessa would score NMMI would score three before taking the fourth set 25-17.
Set 5
In the match-deciding set, NMMI trailed early 3-2 but did not let the match get far away from them. Guler knotted the game at four with a kill before Daicy Benites Franco gave NMMI an 8-6 lead with the help of one her eight kills in the afternoon. Both teams battled in the final set as the match was 11-10 in favor of the home side. Closing the door on Odessa, NMMI closed the match on a 4-1 run to secure the final set 15-11.
The Broncos will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as they take on New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, NM at 6 p.m.
