
On Friday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute hosted Howard College for the final doubleheader of the regular season at the NMMI Ballpark. With a 9-8 loss in game one and a 12-1 loss in the final games of the series, NMMI concludes the year with a 12-24 record in conference play with a 24-30 overall record. With the pair of wins, Howard improves to 21-15 in conference play with a 27-25 overall mark.
GAME 1
The Broncos started the game with a leadoff single by Jose Rodriguez Mestre – his 50th of the season, as he beat the throw to first base. After another single by Misael Maldonado Baez to get runners on the corners, Seojun Oh delivered his 31st RBI of the year with a single up the middle. The Broncos made it 2-0 with a sac fly out by Yahir Fonseca Ortiz. In the top of the second inning, Howard scored a trio of runs to go ahead 3-2.
After a scoreless second inning, the Hawks loaded the bags in the top of the third inning. Down two, Howard used the inning to score five runs and take a 5-2 lead. The Broncos responded with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 5-4.
In the top of the fourth inning, Howard scored a run to grow their lead, 6-4. In the bottom half, Jose Rodriguez Mestre recorded an RBI-single to make it a 6-5 ballgame. However, Howard used the top of the sixth to open the game up as they scored a trio of runs and took a 9-5 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two runners on base, Yahir Fonseca Ortiz crushed his seventh homer of the year for a 3-RBI bomb to get the Broncos back in the game as they trailed 9-8. NMMI attempted the comeback but ended the game on a strikeout.
GAME 2
For the Broncos, game two was highlighted by a solo shot off the bat of Jeremiah Burrola in the bottom of the third innings to cut the deficit to 3-1 after Howard scored a trio of runs in the first three innings. Howard responded in the top of the fifth inning as they scored three more runs to take a 7-1 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Hawks increased their lead to 12-1 after scoring five runs. NMMI attempted a comeback but the season ended on a strikeout as the Broncos attempted to get on base.
