Broncos split series with El Paso Community College

On Saturday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute concluded the series against El Paso Community College with a 3-1 win in game one, followed up by a 12-5 loss in game two at the NMMI Ballpark. With the split, NMMI moves to 11-17 in conference play with a 23-23 overall record. The Tejanos moved to 14-14 in conference play with a 32-16 overall mark.

GAME 1

In game three of the four-game series, El Paso scored early in the top of the first on a double play after getting two runners on base with singles. Down by one, NMMI responded with a solo shot in the home half of the second inning by Joek Rivera Colon – his 7th homer of the season. After a double by Gianlucas Rivera Gotay, the Broncos took a 2-1 lead with the help of a fly out by Ross Stokes to score the second run of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Broncos landed a pair of runners on base with a single and a walk. In the next at bat, NMMI scored with the help of an error to take the eventual 3-1 win. Playing great defensively, the Broncos held the Tejanos scoreless to end the game and secure their 11th conference win.

GAME 2

To open the final game of the series, El Paso scored early by putting a run on the board in the first two innings. Not shying away, NMMI was able to get a run back in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

After a scoreless third inning, the Tejanos scored another pair of runs to go ahead 4-1 in the top of the fourth. However, the Broncos responded in a timely manner. In the home half of the fourth inning, Ross Stokes delivered an RBI-single to help score a run. With two on and two outs, Jose Rodriguez Mestre also tallied an RBI- single to knot the game at 4-4.

To open the fifth inning, El Paso got a pair of runners on base before scoring both runners with an RBI-single off the bat of Chris Ramos as El Paso enjoyed a 6-4 advantage. In the bottom half of the frame, NMMI opened up with a leadoff triple by Misael Maldonado Baez – his 5th of the year. Off the first pitch he saw, Wonjae Cho made it a 6-5 ballgame with an RBI-single.

Flipping the script, the Tejanos tallied five six-inning runs as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. After a scoreless 6-9 innings, El Paso added a run to their total as they took the final game of the series 12-5 after the Broncos failed to score a run after the fifth inning.

NMMI returns to action on Friday, April 25 as they host Amarillo College for a four-game series. First pitch for both days is scheduled for noon.
