Broncos split Friday’s doubleheader with El Paso Community College

On Friday afternoon New Mexico Military Institute split Friday's doubleheader against El Paso Community College at the NMMI Ballpark. With an 11-7 win in game one and a 15-5 loss in game two, the Broncos moved to 22-22 on the year and 10-16 in conference play. On the other hand, El Paso College moves to 13-13 in conference play with a 31-15 overall mark.

GAME 1

The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board as they scored with the help of an error in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, El Paso responded with a 2-RBI triple by Roberto Robles to go ahead 2-1.

With a leadoff single to start the home half of the second inning, the Broncos capitalized with back-to-back RBI-singles by Gianlucas Rivera Gotay and Seojun Oh to jump back in front 3-2. An out later, Seung Min Shin also notched an RBI single to grow the NMMI lead. Scoring the fourth run of the inning, Yahir Fonseca Ortiz recorded an RBI sac fly out to put the Broncos up 5-2. In the third, NMMI scored their lone run with an RBI fly out by Misael Maldonado Baez.

In the top of the fourth inning the Tejanos scored a run with the help of an error to make it a 6-3 ballgame. An inning later, El Paso opened the fifth inning with a solo shot before scoring their second run of the inning on a fielder's choice to trail 6-5.

After a leadoff walk for Rivera Gotay, Wonjae Cho blasted his fifth homer of the season to give NMMI an 8-5 lead. However, El Paso responded by scoring a pair of runs to trail 8-7. Providing some insurance, Ericson Kim belted a 2-run shot over the right field fence to put the Broncos back ahead by three runs. Two outs later, Misael Maldonado Baez tallied an RBI single to put NMMI in the driver's seat 11-7.

GAME 2

In the second game of the doubleheader the Tejanos opened up by recording four singles, a double and a home run to score seven first-inning runs. Down by seven, NMMI responded in the bottom half with a 2-RBI single by Yahir Fonseca Ortiz. In the next at bat, Wonjae Cho delivered an RBI-double to make it a 7-3 ballgame after one.

In the bottom of the second, Orvic Martinez Cid reached base with a leadoff walk. In the third pitch of his at bat, Ross Stokes tallied an RBI-triple to cut the deficit to just three runs. However, El Paso responded with a pair of runs to go ahead 9-4. In the bottom of the third NMMI scored its final run of the afternoon with an RBI-double by Joek Rivera Colon, helping Jose Rodriguez Mestre cross home who reached base with a double of his own to lead off the inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Tejanos scored a trio of runs to take a 12-5 advantage. Again in the sixth, El Paso scored another run to grow their lead. After holding the Broncos scoreless for three innings, the Tejanos scored their pair of runs in the top of the seventh with a 2-run shot by Gus Koehn to go ahead 15-5.

The Broncos conclude the four game series against El Paso Community College tomorrow afternoon with a double header starting at noon.
