On Thursday evening Lady Colt Volleyball fell to Gateway Christian High School in three sets for the second time this season. With the loss NMMI dips to an 8-5 overall record on the year while keeping a 3-1 mark at home.

Set 1

15-25

After both teams used the first few points of the match to settle down, the visiting team began to create momentum that would last the entire match. With the set tied at 5, the Warriors slowly kept growing their lead. With the help of some NMMI errors, Gateway Christian took a 10-5 lead before causing a timeout after the visiting team jumped to a 15-5 advantage.

Extending the set, the Lady Colts used a service ace by Mia Martinez to cut into the deficit. As NMMI fought back, the Warriors kept their foot on the gas taking the first set 25-15.

Set 2

14-25

Similar to the first set, the Warriors took control early and rode that momentum throughout the set. The away side took an initial 4-1 lead and ended the set on a 21-11 run as they took the middle set 25-14.

Set 3

13-25

Mirroring the first two sets, the final set started with a 6-1 run by Gateway Christian to set the tone for the final set. NMMI continued to fight as they battled their way to a 8-5 deficit to try and extend the match. As they had done all night, Gateway Christian found a way to blow open their lead as they took the final set 25-13.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Chantale Riddle believes the Lady Colts can continue to be successful.  “Gateway is a really good team but we have to play better as a whole and if we play better we’re going to be successful … we knew it would be a tough match but now we have to re-focus,” Riddle Said.

NMMI opens district play on Tuesday, Oct. 22 as they travel to Dexter, NM for matchup with Dexter High at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Colts return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8 as they host Hondo High School at 5 p.m. in the Godfrey Athletic Center to end their non-district regular season slate of matches.
