
On Tuesday evening, New Mexico Military Institute improved to 1-2 in district play with the 57-52 win over Dexter High at the Godfrey Athletic Center. With the loss, Dexter dips to 1-2 in district play with a 14-9 overall record.
Q1
Jumping out to a red-hot start, Kaytlyn Lackey opened the game scoring 10 points in the first quarter. NMMI was able to hold a lead throughout most of the opening quarter. However, Dexter was able to score late in the quarter as they tied the game at 12-12 after the first eight minutes.
Q2
In the second quarter, Sofia Barreras made her presence felt as she tallied five point in the quarter with a deep three and a bucket. Adding to the mix, Carolina Meza also drilled a three to help the Lady Colts take a 25-21 lead with less than a minute remaining.
With the help a foul and technical foul, Dexter scored five consecutive free throws to take a 26-25 lead heading into halftime.
Q3
Down by one, NMMI used the entire third quarter to conduct a 14-10 run. Of those 14 points, Neveah Clark scored eight of those with a pair of threes. The only Lady Colt to score in every quarter, Lackey added in four points to the mix. Giving up just 10 points in the third, NMMI was able to head into the fourth quarter with a 39-35 advantage.
Q4
In the fourth quarter, the NMMI offense scored 11 points as Lackey added another four points to her total and Clark added four more to her point tally. Tied a 47-47, NMMI took a 50-47 lead with a minute remaining in regulation.
Down by three, Dexter was able to tie the game at 50 as Melody Duran was able to convert the and-one opportunity to send the game into overtime.
OT
In the final four minutes of action, NMMI held Dexter to just two points. The Lady Colts were able to capitalize on the fouls as they knocked down 4-of-6 free throws while Meza made the big splash with a three. The Lady Colts outscored Dexter 7-2 in the overtime period to come out with a 57-52 win at home.
Head Coach Lawrence Hall on the first district win, “It feels good for the girls, we were able to finally put together a full game and more importantly close and finish,” Hall said. Scoring 22 points for NMMI, Hall liked what he saw from Lackey, “she came into this game determined and you could tell by her play she had an extra gear to her,” Hall said.
NMMI will return to action on Friday, Feb. 14 as travel to Ruidoso, NM to face off with Ruidoso High at 5 p.m. MST
