Lady Colts stumble against Roswell High Saturday afternoon

New Mexico Military Institute ended their non-district games with a tight 34-30 loss against Roswell High. With the loss, the Lady Colts dip to 2-7 on the year. NMMI will finish off the season with six districts games.

Q1

Opening the game to a quick start, the NMMI offense wasted no time finding the bottom of the net. In the first quarter, Sofia Barreras tallied four of her seven total points in the first eight minutes of action. Holding it down of the defensive end, the Lady Colts allowed just four points as they ended the first quarter with an 8-4 lead.

Q2

Off the bench, Carolina Meza knocked down a three in the second quarter to help maintain the lead. In the quarter, Kaytlyn Lackey and Nevaeh Clark also added a bucket to add to the NMMI lead. Roswell was able to gain momentum as they scored six points in the second quarter as NMMI outscored the visiting team, 7-6, in the period. Ariana Ortega tallied four points in the quarter – the most points for Roswell in the first half. However, it wasn’t enough as the Lady Colts held a 15-10 heading into halftime.

Q3

The second half and third quarter was a much different story. NMMI allowed a game-high 15 points in the quarter as Seriyah Minner scored five points for the Coyotes in the period. As a team, Roswell allowed NMMI to just four points in eight minutes.

Lackey scored all the points for the Lady Colts in the third quarter as Roswell headed into the final quarter with a 25-19 advantage.

Q4

Down by six, the Lady Colts were able to cut into the deficit after Barreras, Meza and Clark each nailed a three to tally nine of the 11 fourth-quarter points for the home team. Jadyn Wade also got in the mix as she added the other two points for the Lady Colts.

However, a trio of threes wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as Roswell scored nine points in the final period to secure the 34-30 win.

Lackey led NMMI in scoring with eight points, while Barreras and Clark each tallied seven points. Going 2-for-2 from deep Meza tallied six points in the loss.

Scoring only four points to come out of halftime, Head Coach Lawrence Hall had this to say, “I think we played great for three quarters, and we’re still searching for a game to put four quarters together,” Hall said. “Unfortunately we didn’t play very well in the third quarter and it came back to bite us.”

NMMI will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 4 as the Lady Colts open district play as they host Ruidoso High at 5 p.m. MST.
