Colts place 2nd at District Meet in Tularosa

The Boys and Girls Colt track athletes are off to state after wrapping up the season with a competitive meet in Tularosa at the District 4-3A championship. The boys took 2nd place, and the girls put in all the effort that they could. The boys and girls Colt athletes who either qualified by times and marks, or who placed first or second at the district meet, will go on to compete at the NMAA 3A State Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

 

Cohen Tomasits didn’t let anyone chase him down, he got first place in every event that he competed in, and he even exceeded the state qualifying standards in two of his three events. In the 100m dash, Cohen had a state qualifying time of (11.19 seconds). In the 200m dash, Cohen had a state qualifying time of (22.26). In the boys long jump, Cohen jumped (20-8), barely meeting the state qualifying standard, but this did not matter because he still got first place, ultimately securing himself a third ticket to state.

 

Miguel Garcia is also a hard athlete to hunt down, this guy is fast. Miguel competed in four different events at the district meet. Miguel competed in four different events, all four of which he exceeded the state qualifying standards, all four of which he also placed first or second place in. In the boys 100m dash, Miguel placed second behind Cohen, Miguel ran a state qualifying time of (11.40). In the boys 200m dash, Miguel ran a state qualifying time of (23.04). In the boys 400m dash, Miguel placed first with a state qualifying time of (52.40). Miguel competed in the boys triple jump where he reached a state qualifying distance of (38-11).

 

Sawyer Hull is the type of athlete who prefers to not just win in his sport, but rather dominate it. Sawyer competed in three different events, all three of which he placed first or second, and all three he was able to successfully qualify for state. In the boys javelin, Sawyer threw a state qualifying distance of (157-4), placing him in first. In the boys high jump, Sawyer had a state qualifying jump of (5-10) placing him in first. In the boys long jump, Sawyer qualified for state, and got second place with a distance of (19-9).

 

Edward Vigil is only a sophomore, but he is performing like a highschool senior. Edward competed in the boys 110m hurdles, and the boys 300m hurdles. Edward began his night of competition with a third place finish in the 110m hurdles holding a time of (18.64). In the boys 300m hurdles, Edward placed first, with a time of (44.89).

 

Warren Spaniel competed in multiple events, he excelled in the 400m dash where got second place with a time of (55.74). Warren also got second place, and a state qualifying height of (5-8) in the boys high jump.

 

Jose Arenal competed in the boys 100m dash where he placed third, at a time of (11.72). Jose also competed in the 200m dash, and the boys long jump, Jose did not place or qualify for state in either event.

 

Yong Bessel competed in the boys discus and shot put. Yong got first place in shot put with a state qualifying distance of (118-11), and first place in the boys shot put with a distance of (41-3).

 

Cale Taylor competed in the 1600m dash and got second place with a time of (5:15.78).

 

Sam McCargish got second place in the boys shot put with a distance of (40-5).

 

The boys Colt team came together for the boys 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, 4x400m relay, the boys sprint medley relay, and the 4x800m relay. The boys 4x100m relay team got first place with a state qualifying time of (45.24). The boys 4x200m relay team got second place with a time of (1:36.79). The boys 4x400m relay team got a time of (4:05.70). The boys sprint medley team got second place with a time of (4:11.33).

 

On the Lady Colts side of the meet, the girls did not give up so easily. In the girls 4x200m relay, the team placed second, with a time of (2:06.04). In the girls sprint medley relay, the team placed third, with a time of (5:30.84).

 

Jaylah Clay competed in the 100m dash, and the 200m dash. In the 100m dash, Jaylah placed second, with a time of (13.81). In the girls 200m dash, Jaylah placed third, with a time of (30.54).

 

Roslyn Densmore competed in the girls 800m dash, and the girls 1600m run. In the 800m, Roslyn got second place, with a time of (2:40.74). In the 1600m run, Roslyn got second place with a time of (6:42.84).

 

Haven Hall stole first place in the girls high jump with a height of (4-4). Haven also competed in the girls pole vault where she vaulted a height of (6-6), putting her in second place.

 

Evelyn McClain-Yu competed in the girls long jump, and the girls 100m dash. In the girls long jump, Evelyn got third place with a distance of (13-9). In the girls 100m dash, Evelyn placed fifth with a time of (14.42).

 

The state meet is May 9-10 at the University of New Mexico Track & Field Complex in Albuquerque. Show up to see the NMMI Colt Track and Field team compete.
