
New Mexico Military Institute hit the road on Monday evening to face off with No. 10 Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX. With an 88-47 loss, the Broncos dip to 0-3 in conference play and 4-11 overall. The Plainsmen, on the other hand, improve to 2-0 in conference play with a 14-2 overall record.

After NMMI scored the opening bucket with a reverse layup by 21, the home team answered quickly with a 7-0 run as they took a 7-2 lead with 15 minutes on the clock. After a slight scoring drought, Joseph Thomas found the bottom of the net for the first time to make it a 18-6 deficit with over 11 minutes remaining in the half.
The first half ended on a 22-11 run for the home team as the Plainsmen allowed NMMI to just seven made field goals in the first half. David Popa added seven points in the first half as the first 20 minutes of action finished 40-17 in favor of the Plainsmen.

Like the first half, the Broncos scored the first points of the half to cut the deficit to 18 points. After a deep three by Frank Phillips and a couple of defensive stops, the home team took a 52-27 lead 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Ignacio Garcia added his two buckets of the evening in the second half to help NMMI offensively. Popa shot 5-for-6 in the second half as he tallied 11 of his 16 total points in the final 20 minutes of action.
As the Broncos tried to conduct a comeback, the Plainsmen would answer with a bucket, three or dunk. Frank Phillips ended the game with a pair of threes as they finished the game with a 88-47 advantage and improved to 2-0 in conference play.
Popa was only the only Bronco to score in double figures with 16 points. Justin Bramao led NMMI with five rebounds with three of those coming on the offensive end. Popa tallied the lone takeaway with a steal as the Broncos forced nine total turnovers.
The Broncos return to action on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 pm MST as they host Odessa College in the Cahoon Armory gym.
