On Friday evening, New Mexico Military Institute defeated Estancia High School, 62-37, earning a spot in Saturday’s championship game. With three consecutive wins, the Colts improved to 5-2 on the year.
Q1
Right out the gate the Colts wasted no time firing on offense as they jumped out to an early lead with the help of a pair of threes from the corner by Xavier Johnson. Coming off the bench, Jacob Hayes added five quick points with a triple and an easy layup to give NMMI the 19-6 advantage after the first quarter. On defense, the Colts forced four turnovers to help create the 13-point lead.
Q2
In the second period, Estancia was able to make some adjustments and allow the Colts to just seven points in the quarter. Of those seven points, Micah Grado added three with a triple while Johnson scored a pair of layups. On defense, the Colts allowed 10 points as the score was 26-16 heading into halftime.
Q3
Coming out of the half, the Colts had another highly explosive offensive quarter scoring 19 with the help of three buckets by Sawyer Hull who looked unstoppable down the stretch. Adding in three of his 16 total points, Johnson pitched in with a triple as the Colts jumped out to a 45-25 lead after 24 minutes of action.
Q4
With a 20-point lead the Colts did not take their foot off the gas in the final quarter. It was the Cole Seidenberger show in the final minutes as he accounted for nine of the 17 total fourth quarter points. Johnson added another layup as he was the only scorer for the Colts to score in each quarter. Hull helped secure the 62-37 win as he nailed a deep three to seal the deal.
The Colts return to the court tomorrow evening as they take on the winner between Melrose and Moriarity in the championship match, with tipoff set for 4 p.m. MST in Moriarity, NM.
