
On Monday afternoon, New Mexico completed the series sweep over Clarendon College with a 13-0 and 10-7 win in Monday's doubleheader at the NMMI Ballpark. Winners of eight straight, the Broncos improved to 20-18 with an 8-12 mark in conference play. Clarendon College dips to 6-31 on the season.
GAME 1
After no runs in the first inning, NMMI opened the second inning with a leadoff double by Jose Rodriguez Mestre to get the party started. In the next at bat, Wonjae Cho tallied an RBI single to score the first run of the afternoon. An out later, Ericson Kim notched his 2nd double of the season, scoring another run for the Broncos.
With one out and one runner on, Joek Rivera Colon belted his fifth triple of the season to give NMMI a 3-0 lead. The Broncos scored the final run of the inning with a groundout.
In the top of the fourth inning, the NMMI offense went to work. NMMI tallied six singles, a double and a walk to score six runs as the Broncos took a commanding 10-0 lead. Later in the final inning of the game, Misael Maldonado Baez recorded a 2-RBI single before NMMI scored the 13th run on a double play to hold onto game three of the series 13-0 after five complete innings.
GAME 2
In the final game of the series, NMMI made some quick and early noise. To open the game, Misael Maldonado Baez blasted his 8th homer of the year to take a quick 2-0 advantage. After a single, Yahir Fonseca Ortiz copied his teammate and went yard to put the Broncos ahead by four runs.
With one out the Broncos scored an additional three runs with a pair of doubles and an RBI single by Seojun Oh to give NMMI a 7-0 lead. However, Clarendon would respond with a run of their own to make it a 7-1 ballgame. In the fourth and fifth, NMMI scored off a run as they held a 9-1 lead after five innings.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs made things interesting. Down by eight runs, Clarendon loaded the bases before Fernando Serrano blasted a grand slam to make it a 9-7 ballgame midway through seven innings.
Seojun Oh responded in the top of the 8th inning with his sixth homer of the season – three of those coming in conference play. After holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the final two frames, NMMI held on the win and completed the series sweep with a 10-7 win.
The Broncos return to action on Friday, April 11 at noon as they open up a four game series against Western Texas College in Snyder, TX. The series will conclude on Saturday, April 12 with another doubleheader.
