Broncos drop contest against NE Oklahoma A&M, 16-15

On Saturday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute fell against conference opponent Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College 16-15. With the loss the Broncos dip to 3-4 on the year with a 2-3 mark in conference play. 

Q1

To open the game, the Golden Norseman opened their first drive moving the ball 75 yards in 10 plays. The drive consisted of a balance of five runs and five pass attempts. After a 13-yard pass put the Golden Norseman in NMMI territory, Ethan Lawrence took a handoff from 36 yards out to give the visiting team an early 7-0 lead after the converted extra point attempt. 

After the Broncos were forced to punt on their opening drive, the defense came up huge with a goal line stop and forced fumble as Willie Hamilton jumped on the loose ball to give the Bronco offense another opportunity but were forced into another punt situation. 

Q2

On the first play of the second quarter, Stilton McKelvey picked off Carson Cooksey from the NE Oklahoma A&M 20 yard line and returned it to the house for a touchdown to get NMMI on the board 6-7 after a blocked extra point attempt. 

On the next drive, NMMI stopped the Golden Norseman on fourth down from their own eight yard line to keep NEO off the board. After a NMMI punt, NE Oklahoma A&M was held to three points as Ryder Goodwin knocked down a 40-yard field goal attempt to put the visiting team ahead 10-6. 

Taking over with just over seven minutes in the half, the Broncos offense was able to find some rhythm as they drove the ball 62 yards in 18 total plays which was capped by a 30-yard field goal attempt, drilled by Jack Nelson to cut the deficit to one with a 10-9 game heading into the halftime break. 

Q3

After the break, both teams opened with a punt on the first possession. With the ball on their own 18 yard line, the Broncos were intercepted as Jake South tried to find Karl Peterson but was picked off by Braxton Street. However, the Broncos were able to come up with another goal line stop as they forced a fumble which was recovered by McKelvey at the NMMI one yard line.

After a NMMI punt, which set up NE Oklahoma A&M on the NMMI 35, the Golden Norseman were able to extend their lead with a touchdown rush by Lawrence to make it a 16-9 ballgame after the successful extra-point attempt.

Q4

On their opening drive of the fourth quarter, the Broncos answered with a nine play 75-yard touchdown drive to cut into the lead. On third down South connected with Kendall Jones from 15 yards out. However, the Broncos extra point attempt was blocked to keep it a 16-15 advantage for the visiting team. 

Taking over with just over two minutes remaining, NMMI was able to gain 23 yards and get Nelson within field goal range. With 45 seconds on the clock, Nelson missed the 30 yard field goal attempt to secure the 16-15 score line for the visiting team. 

The Broncos return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 26 as they make their final regular-season road trip to Athens, TX to take on Trinity Valley Community College at 2 p.m. CDT.
