On Thursday evening, New Mexico Military Institute took a break from district play as they took on Cathedral High in El Paso, TX. Coming out with the 33-21 win, the Colts improve to 5-2 on the year as they head home to host a pair of regular season games to end the regular season.
Q1
After winning the coin toss, the home team took the field first as the NMMI defense settled in. Cathedral opened the game with a 10 play drive that tallied a total of 34 yards as the Colts forced a turnover on downs after Cathedral failed on a fourth and nine conversion.
Taking over on their own 42 yard line, NMMI’s offense wasted no time getting points on the board. In the next six plays the Colts ran the ball all six plays which was capped by a 29-yard dash by Cohen Tomasists who left the defenders yards behind to give the visiting team the initial 7-0 lead.
With control on the defensive side, NMMI allowed Cathedral to 49 yards in five total minutes as the Irish settled for a field goal attempt. From their own 14 yardline, Cathedral missed the attempt to hold them scoreless through one.
Q2
With momentum on their side, the Colts used their next possession to take a 14-0 lead with a 32-yard touchdown connection from Cole Seidenberger to Marcus Kannady in just over a minute of time of possession.
After three consecutive three and outs, the Colts got another crack at it with less than three minutes to go in the half. In just one play, Cohen Tomasists blasted through the hole for a 60-yard touchdown rush - his second of the night. However, Cathedral would answer with their first points on the following drive with a 14-yard rush touchdown by David Monks to make it a 20-7 ballgame.
Q3
Coming out after halftime, the Colts rhythm continued as they took the opening drive and moved the ball 75 yards in just five plays before Siedenbeger took a keeper from one yard out to give NMMI a 26-7 lead after a failed two-point attempt.
On their next drive Cathedral found some momentum as they drove the ball 75 yards in just five of their own plays. With the ball on the NMMI 23 yardline, Jose Carlos Herrera connected with Josh Bowling to cut the Colt lead to 26-14. The quarter came to an end after three consecutive punts by both teams combined.
Q4
After a NMMI punt, Cathedral took their first possession in the final quarter from their own 20 yard line. In eight plays the Irish moved the ball 80 yards before being finished off by a 6 yard touchdown pass from Herrera Passes to Cruz Colon to cut the lead to 26-21 with eight minutes left on the clock. After six consecutive runs by Siedenberger, the Colts took the lead as he forced his way into the endzone from one yard out to give the Colts a 33-21 lead.
With a great team performance Head Coach John O’Mera enjoyed how the team bounced back after last week’s performance.“They (Cathedral) got themselves back into the game with their offense late in the fourth quarter and our defense bent but didn’t break … they got us the ball back and the offense finished it off by giving us the two-score lead,” O’Mera said.
The Colts return to action next Friday, Oct. 18 as they return home to host Ruidoso High at 7 p.m. for homecoming weekend at Colt Field.
