
On Sunday afternoon, New Mexico Military concluded its four-game series against Northeastern Junior College with a 16-3 loss. Securing the series on Saturday, NMMI opens the season with a 3-1 record. With their lone win of the weekend, Northeastern JC Improve to 1-6 to start the year.
To open the contest, the visiting team was able to take a 1-0 lead after the top half of the first inning. After giving up back-to-back walks, Northeastern was able to score with an RBI-double by Brenden Clelland on the sixth pitch of his at-bat. With his first career start, Trevor Johnson was able to strikeout a pair of batters in the opening frame while leaving a runner stranded.
After a 1-2-3 top half of the second inning, the Broncos used the home half to score two runs. First, Ross Stokes drilled a ball to left field which was enough to reach third base and help Seojun Oh reach home after getting on base with a walk and give NMMI a 2-1 lead.
The plainsmen were able to respond with a run of their own after Yuusei Uzawa doubled before crossing home with the help of an RBI single by Max Valerio a batter later to make it tied 2-2 after three innings.
Following a scoreless frame in the fourth inning, the Plainsmen regained the lead in the top of the fifth with back-to-back doubles after Brayden Stufft recorded an RBI double to help a runner cross home plate. Two walks later, Northeastern scored with the help an error to take a 5-2 lead. An inning later, the Plainsmen scored again, this time off the bat of Lewis Coonts who homered to left field and give the visiting team a 6-2 advantage after six innings.
In the seventh, Northeastern was able to score four runs and take a commanding 10-2 lead with the help of a 2-RBI single by Tanner Peerey. The Plainsmen followed continued their momentum an inning later as they were able to score six runs to open the eighth inning.
Trying the mount a hopeful comeback, the Broncos were able to score a run in the bottom of the final inning with the help of an RBI single by Seung Min Shin as he helped Cinco Holloway cross home plate to give make it a 16-3 final after a fly out by NMMI.
Picking up the series win, Head Coach Chris Cook was pleased with the weekend's results, "overall a positive outcome over the weekend, especially for the new guys. There was a lot of firsts, which tends to happen on opening weekend," Cook said. Despite scoring 25 runs over the weekend, dropping the final game of the series is something Cook doesn't want to see, "obviously we have to play better in game four … we didn't make them earn their runs we allowed too many walks, hit by pitches, free bases " Cook said.
The Broncos return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 8 as they host Western Nebraska CC for a two-day series with a pair of doubleheaders. First pitch for both days is scheduled for noon at the NMMI Ballpark in Roswell, NM. The four-game series will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 9 with another pair of games.
