Broncos split twin bill with Rough Riders

SEMINOLE, Texas – It was a tale of two different games for the New Mexico Military Institute Bronco baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Robert Ryan Field.

In Game 1 against the Luna Community College Rough Riders, the Broncos were fueled by three home runs which included a grand slam by Edwin Martinez Pagani that sparked a 13-run frame in the bottom of the first.

Gavon Clemons and Cameron Stevenson each hit a pair of two-run blasts during the onslaught.

Stevenson also drove in two runs with a single while Clemons hit a two RBI double.

Albert Oliva Velez added to the rally with an RBI single.

NMMI was able to tack on three more runs in the fourth as Clemons brought in two runs with a double and Rudy Solis hit an RBI double.

The Broncos (7-1 overall) made quick work of Luna in five innings with a 16-0 victory.

Game 2 was a different result for the Bronco offense.

Luna (1-1) came out with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a two-run homer by Dusty Slipe. NMMI cut the deficit with an RBI single by Henner Gonzalez Rodriguez in the bottom half of the frame.

On three RBI singles, Luna extended its lead to 5-1.

Justin Lawrence chiseled the deficit to three with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, but the Roughriders answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth.

David Amaya highlighted the big inning for Luna with a two-run home run.

The Broncos scored one more run on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rough Riders held for the 8-3 win.

NMMI's four-game series concludes Sunday, Feb. 21 with another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. CST.
