On Thursday evening, New Mexico Military Institute closed day one of the 31st Annual Sertoma Colt Classic with a 10-0 win over Shiprock. Before tonight’s game, Art “Bull” Torrez was honored during the ceremonial first-pitch as his daughter Sarah Fletcher and grandson Joshua Anderson threw out the first pitch. With the win, the Colts improve to 4-4 on the year and earn a spot in tomorrow’s semi-final match. With the loss, Shiprock dropped to 3-4 on the season and will take on Dexter tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. MDT.

After two outs to open the inning, Javier Yepiz got his excellent night started with a shot to center field that he reached home on to complete an inside the park homer.  Up 1-0, NMMI opened the home half of the third with a double off the bat of Tegin Maloney. An out later, Yepiz picked up his second RBI of the night with a double, which helped Tegin Maloney score. The Colts scored another run as Yepiz crossed home on a wild pitch to put NMMI ahead 3-0.

In the fourth the Colts opened the inning by loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. With the help of two passed balls, the Colts were able to score another pair of runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tegin Maloney belted a ball down the left field line to record a triple before adding another run as Caden Carter was hit by a pitch.

Ahead by six, the Colts flexed for the final time in the sixth inning. After a strikeout to open the bottom half, the Colts loaded the bases with another double by Yepiz, a walk and a hit by pitch. With bases loaded, NMMI scored with the help of a walk, which advanced all runners.

In the next at-bat, Michael Ortega ended the game with a 3-RBI triple as he cleared the bags and gave NMMI the 10-0 run-rule win.

Head Coach Brad Blackwell on tonight’s win, “Yepiz came out, looking for his first win. He’s pitched well for us this year and today he had the defense behind him to help build his confidence and give up four complete innings,” Blackwell said. “Most importantly, like I’ve told the boys all year, if you have more hits than strikeouts then we’ll be in a good position … and today we did just that we had 11 hits, nine strikeouts and a win.”

The Colts will return to action tomorrow, Friday, March 21 as they take on Socorro High at the NMMI Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MDT.
