On Tuesday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute took down Sandia Prep in five innings, 13-3 at the NMMI Ballpark. With the win the Colts improved to 3-0 in district play with a 9-5 overall mark. With the loss, Sandia Prep dips to 2-5 on the year.
Sandia Prep wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. After a single and a walk, the Sun devils scored a pair of runs with a single by Ethan Dudley to take a 2-0 lead. After being held scoreless in the first, NMMI opened the bottom of the second with a leadoff single by Nicolas Barcelo. With one out, Konstatino Scopelitis picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly out to right field to cut the lead in half. Noah Martinez tied the score 2-2 on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the third the Colts created separation. After reaching on a walk, Barcenas crossed home plate with an RBI single by Tegin Maloney to give the Colts a 3-2 lead. Hitting fourth in the order, Grant Maloney belted an RBI triple to right field and gave NMMI a 4-2 advantage. A pitch later, Grant Maloney stole home to give the home squad a 5-2 lead.
Again in the fourth, the Colts created separation with a sacrifice bunt by Nicolas Barcenas. After Tegin Maloney was walked, Grant Maloney helped him cross home plate and give the Colts a 7-2 advantage with an RBI single.
The visiting team was able to score another run in the top of the fifth inning but it wouldn’t be enough. In the bottom half, the Colts exploded by scoring six runs to end the game after five innings 13-3.
Head Coach Brad Blackwell on the win, “we came out a little flat. I don't know if it was the weather or what, but them scoring two quick runs woke us up. Guys came out and played hard, executed what we wanted to do offensively. We had some effective bunts, ran the bases well with nine hits and discipline at the plate with nine walks. You do all that and it’s a good recipe for success, Blackwell said. “Looking ahead to next week with East Mountain, a lot of familiar faces but are guys are ready for the task and we’ll use the next few days to prepare,” Blackwell said.
The Colts return to action on Tuesday, April 8 as they take on East Mountain in Sandia Park, NM at 4 p.m. MDT for their first district road contest.
