On Friday night, New Mexico Military Institute took down Socorro High 15-2 in five winnings. With the win, the Colts improved to 5-4 on the year and earned a spot in the 31st Annual Sertoma Colt Classic championship game. With the loss, Socorro dips to 3-3 and earns a spot in the third place match tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. MDT.
In the top of the first inning, Socorro was able to score a pair of runs with the help of four hit-by-pitches and a walk. After getting eight batters to the plate, the Warriors ended the top of the first inning with a 2-0 lead.
In the home half, the Colts were able to score four of their runs with the help of a pair of walks and errors. NMMI took the 4-2 lead after Michael Ortega grounded out but not before helping Javier Yepiz cross home plate.
In the bottom of the second inning, the NMMI exploded as they scored five runs in the inning to take a commanding 9-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, Tegin Maloney reached home after smashing a ball into the center field fence to put NMMI in the driver’s seat 12-2 after three innings.
Again in the fourth inning, the Colts added a trio of runs after Rodolfo Anaya opened the inning with an inside the park homer before Nicolas Barcelo Teran and Grant Maloney each picked up an RBI single to put the Colts on top 15-2.
In his first start on the mound, Nicolas Barcelo Teran opened the game by hitting five batters but closed out his three-inning win with five strikeouts. As a squad, the Colts completed the no-hitter after Nicolas Barcenas and Grant Maloney closed out the game for NMMI.
Head Coach Brad Blackwell on the win, “that’s an overall team performance. We had three pitchers combined for a bullpen no-hitter. We gave up no hits, no errors and we ran the bases really well with double-digit stolen bases,” Blackwell said. Looking forward to tomorrow’s championship game, “just because they’re a JV team doesn’t mean we can take them lightly, they’re here for a reason and were last year’s champs.” Blackwell said.
The Colts will be back in action tomorrow evening as they host the Goddard JV squad in the championship game of the 31st Annual Sertoma Colt Classic at the NMMI Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MDT.
