Broncos push win streak to 14 straight after 3-0 sweep over Midland College

On Saturday afternoon, No. 3 New Mexico Military Institute defeated conference opponent Midland College in shutout fashion taking down the Lady Chaps 3-0. With the win, the Broncos improved to 20-2 on the year with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

Set 1

The Broncos wasted no time setting the tone as they earned the few points of the match. With the early momentum, NMMI never took their foot off the gas. As the Broncos tried to grow their lead, Midland stuck around through the middle of the set answering every NMMI point with one of their own.

With a 16-14 advantage, the Broncos began working towards the end of the first set as they went on a 9-6 run to take the first set 25-20 and shut down any comeback opportunity.

Set 2

Continuing their momentum from the first set, NMMI jumped out to an early 8-3 with the help of beautifully placed skip set kill by Dilean Bounds. After Midland cut the Bronco lead to just one at 8-7, the offense switched gears.

With the aid of a massive Yuliana Favela kill in the middle of the set the home side jumped out to a 16-10 lead - from which they would run away with the set. The Broncos concluded the middle set on a dominating 9-5 run as they gave no chance for the Lady Chaps to get back into the match taking the second set 25-15.

Set 3

Early in the final set, both teams matched each other evenly  as the first points of the match went back and forth with no team being able to take control. With the score at 4-3 in favor of the Broncos, NMMI found another gear, with the help of some errors, to take control of the final set.

The Broncos took a commanding 19-11 lead before closing the game on a 6-0 run with the help of a pair of service aces by MJ Stephens to take the match-clinching set 25-11.

With the win NMMI sits atop of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings as the only unbeaten team to open conference competition.

The Broncos will return to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 9 as they travel to Borger, TX for a 6 p.m. CDT matchup with Frank Philips College to end the first round of conference matches.
