The Lady Colt volleyball team picked up their ninth win of the season, clipping the Hondo Valley Eagles at home in four sets: 25-12, 25-19, 18-25, 25-9.

It was the second meeting this season between the two teams, with NMMI earning a 3-0 win at Hondo last week.

The Institute looked dominant in the first in final sets, with excellent serving all around, especially from junior setter Mia Martinez.

The Lady Colt attack was solid as well, with outside hitters Sofia Barreras (junior) and Kaytlyn Lackey (sophomore) both close to double digits in kills.

“I think Sofia [Barreras] was strong today and hit well. I think KayKay [Kaylyn Lackey] also hit well and served very well, and Mia Martinez had four aces to end the game,” said NMMI head coach Chantale Riddle.

In sets two and three, coach Riddle took the opportunity to play everyone from her bench.

“It’s nice that we got to play a bunch of different players,” continued coach Riddle. “I think it helps our JV learn how quick the game is and it help us as a whole in case something happens, if someone gets injured. Our whole program is growing from a game like tonight.”

Coach Riddle and her Lady Colts have two more ‘tune-up’ matches before district play begins at Dexter on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Both are on the road starting with Mesilla Valley Christian, a squad that that NMMI fell to in pool play at the Warrior Invitational back on Sept. 6.

The match at MVC will be in Las Cruces on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 pm, followed by a short trip to Fort Sumner to take on the Vixens on Tuesday, Oct. 15 – also with a scheduled 6:30 pm start.

“Both are strong teams will help us get ready for district,” finished coach Riddle. “We’re excited to go back and play Mesilla again in a full match.”
