Lady Colts comeback bid falls short against Loving High

On Saturday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute hosted Loving High for a matchup that ended 39-29 in favor of Loving. With the loss, NMMI opens the young season 0-4 while Loving improve to a 2-7 overall record.

Q1

In the first eight minutes of action the visiting team took momentum as they were able to force turnovers, which helped them create a 10-5 lead. In the first quarter, Kaytlyn Lackey tallied three of her 13 total points. Siany McGhan scored the only other basket for the Lady Colts in the first period. Loving was able to spread the scoring as five different players found the bottom of the net in the first quarter.

Q2

With the help of a plethora of free throw attempts by Ezebelle Gomez and another bucket by Lackey the Lady Colts were able to score six points in the quarter to head into halftime down 21-11 after Loving scored 11 points in the second quarter.

Q3

Trailing by 10, NMMI responded in the third quarter by scoring nine total points. Gomez drilled a three while Angel Flores-Vargas found scored a layup. On defense, the Lady Colts gave up the least amount of point in a quarter as Loving scored nine in the third. After 24 minutes of action, the Lady Falcons entered the final period with a 31-20 lead.

Q4

In the final period Lackey found some offensive rhythm as she was abler to rattle off seven of the team’s nine total points in the fourth. However, Sierra Rodriguez scored all of the Lady Falcons eight points in final period to help Loving High to a 39-29 win.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Lawrence Hall was pleased with the adjustments the team was able to make out of halftime, “in the second half our defense looked a lot better, we started playing more comfortable and not worrying about getting calls,” Hall said. “Overall, I think we got mentally-tougher today. Which is going to help us down the long run,” Hall said.

NMMI will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Godfrey Athletic Center Gym as they meet up with Hondo Valley for the second time this year.
