Colt Golf wins Buck Brandon Classic

The Colts won their first golf tournament of the young season Monday in Hobbs, topping the Goddard Rockets by a single stroke to win the Buck Brandon Classic with a combined score of 332.

Junior Mason Hicks finished third individually with a 77, three strokes behind winner Levi Fisher of Trinity Christian School in Lubbock, TX. Hicks saved some of his best golf of the day for the back nine, shooting an even 36 with three birdies and two pars.

Six of the eight Colt golfers finished in the top half of the 48 player field that featured 4A squads Goddard, Lovington and Trinity as well as 5A teams Hobbs, Clovis and Roswell High. Fellow A-3A members Clovis Christian, Tatum and Gateway Chritian finished in the bottom three.

A couple young Colts had top-15 finishes, with freshman Jay Payne in 11th with an 83 and sophomore Bruno Esocbar coming in 14th with an 84. Recent soccer state champion David Portugal finished 20th with an 88, the final score that made up the team total.

Right behind Portugal in 22nd was senior Tom Aspinall at 89 and junior Jose Lerma in 23rd with a score of 90.
