Plethora of turnovers cost Broncos in 32-9 loss at Trinity Valley

On Saturday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season with a 32-9 loss against conference foe Trinity Valley Community College. With the setback, NMMI dips to 3-5 overall on the year with a 2-5 mark in conference play. 

Q1

On the opening drive of the game, the Broncos offense took the field first earning their first 3rd down conversion before facing another 3rd down. At third with 11 yards to go, Jake South was picked off by Jerrick Harper. 

Taking over in Bronco territory, the Cardinals quarterback notched his first passing touchdown of the game to take a 7-0 lead with 12:09 in the first quarter. 

Answering on their next drive, NMMI scored quickly as South connected with Kendall Jones from 70 yards out with a deep bomb to knot the game at seven.  

On their next drive, the Cardinals moved the ball down field but NMMI was able to force a field goal attempt from 30 yards, which was drilled to give the home team a 10-7 advantage. 

Following a Bronco punt, the defense came up with their first takeaway as Stilton McKelvey caught the tipped pass and gave the offense great field position with a return to the Cardinal 40 yard line. A few minutes later the Broncos would fail a 4th down conversion attempt to give Trinity Valley back the ball. 

Q2

In the second quarter, the Broncos opened their first drive with an interception as the Cardinals took over on offense following the second interception of the afternoon. Less than a minute later, McKelvey tallied his second intersection of the half as he picked off the Cardinal quarterback. Once again he set up the offense with good field possession after a lengthy return.

The offense was able to move the ball enough to set up a field goal try, but Jack Nelson had his kick blocked to keep it a 10-7 game. After Nathan Wallin sacked the quarterback to force a punt, the offense took over but South was picked off for the third time of the half. 

On their next offensive possession, Jamary Williams scored a 15 yard rushing touchdown for Trinity Valley. On the extra point attempt McKelvey made his presence felt more as he blocked the attempt, to make it a 16-7 advantage for the home team. The Broncos were able to force a punt, but the ball was fumbled during the drive to give the Cardinals a short field. A few plays later, the defense achieved another takeaway as Prestyn Saole punched the ball out while Damon Mayberry jumped on the ball to record the third takeaway of the half for the Broncos. 

On the final play of the half, NMMI tallied their fourth turnover of the half as Rayden Aphayvong notched his fourth interception of the year to stop any scoring chances for the Cardinals. 

Q3

Coming out of halftime, the Broncos forced an opening-drive punt but the return was fumbled which gave Trinity Valley another opportunity with excellent field position. A couple plays later the Bronco defense was able to force a field goal attempt which was made by Donovan Malone to give the Cardinals a 19-7 lead. The period would stall out as neither offense was able to routinely move the ball.  

Q4

In the final quarter of the game Trinity Valley was able to score a touchdown early with a 21 yard touchdown pass. However on the extra point attempt, McKelvey blocked the kick which was picked up and returned for two points by Daylan Chichester for around 90 yards to make it a two possession  game with a 25-9 lead for the home team.

In the final minute of the contest, Trinity Valley found the back of the end zone as Champ Harris connected with Germonie Davis from 21 yards out to take a 32-9 lead. 

The Broncos return to the field on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they host their final non-conference game against Snow College at 2 p.m. MDT at the Wool Bowl.
