On Tuesday evening Lady Colt Volleyball battled to a 3-2 victory over Hagerman High School at the Godfrey Athletic Center Gym. With the win, NMMI improves to 5-2, with three consecutive wins.
Set 1
Setting the tone for the match, the first set was a great representation of how the match would play out. NMMI took the first point of the set but both teams battled.
Trading points through the first 20 points, no side was able to create separation until the Lady Colts, with the help of Kaytlyn Lackey, were able to take the final points of the set scoring the last four points off her service to take the first set 25-23.
Set2
Answering back in the second set, Hagerman was able to keep NMMI at a distance, maintaining a slight advantage throughout the set. Every time the Lady Colts attempted to make a run the Bobcats would answer with points of their own. With the help of a plethora of Lady Colt errors, Hagerman took the second set 25-20.
Set 3
Hagerman entered the third set with momentum from the second one, jumping out to an early lead. Fighting back, the Lady Colts made a run of their own forcing a timeout as the score was knotted at 11. Following the timeout, the Bobcats went on a six-point run to grow their lead before eventually taking the third set 25-21.
Set 4
Extending the match, NMMI jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with the help of some Lackey kills before forcing a Hagerman timeout to try and stop the Lady Colt momentum but it wouldn’t help. The home side extended their lead anytime Hagerman would score a point.
With a 21-12 lead, the Lady Colts forced another timeout before knotting the match at 2-2, taking the fourth set 25-16.
Set 5
After the Bobcats scored the first two set points of the final set, the Colts answered back with their first run of the set, scoring five straight to take a 5-2 advantage. After the Bobcats reached seven points, it was a back-and-forth game neither team could pull away.
With a 11-10 lead, NMMI was forced to call its final timeout of the match. Putting an end to the battle, Sara Pires recorded a kill to secure the match with a 15-13 fifth set win.
Head Coach Chantale Riddle was pleased with how Pires and Lackey performed, “They both got at least 40 balls, proud of them for taking on that load and at the end of the game they know the ball’s going their way and they know how to step up and score.” Using all five sets for the first time this season is something to learn from, “Winning a five setter, regardless of how you play, takes a lot of composure … winning the fourth and final set is important for the team’s confidence moving forward,” Riddle said.
The Lady Colts return to action on Thursday, Sept. 12 as they take on Gateway Christian School at 6:30 p.m. in Roswell, NM.
