On Tuesday evening New Mexico Military Institute and Mescalero Apache met for the third time this season - the first at the Godfrey Athletic Center Gym. The Lady Colts handled the Chiefs in just three sets to improve to 6-4 on the year while the visiting team dipped to a 1-10 overall record.

Set 1

25-4

The Lady Colts opened the match catching fire with the help of junior Mia Martinez as she sparked a 10-1 run to open the match as all the opening points occurred off her service.

With the help of some receiving errors and hitting errors by Mescalero Apache, the Lady Colts were able to achieve another scoring roll, this time a 15-3 run to secure the first set easily 25-4.

Set 2

25-16

The middle set was the most evenly matched as the visiting team opened the scoring. Down 3-0 early in the set, the Lady Colts flipped a switch and got into gear.

Sara Pires opened the scoring for NMMI in the second set with a massive kill that rattled the gym floor. The home side conducted a run of their own to take an 8-6 lead - from which they never looked back. With the small lead, NMMI continued to pull away eventually taking the middle set 25-16 with the help of a powerful kill by Kaytlyn Lackey.

Set 3

25-13

Matching the tone from the first two sets, the Lady Colts rolled into the third set with momentum and rhythm. Behind Lackey and Pires, NMMI took an early 6-2 lead before running away with the match. The Chiefs tried to fight their way back into the match as they earned a couple points, but the offensive attack by the Lady Colts was too much.

The home side secured the straight-set victory on a 10-6 run to remain unbeaten at home on the season.

“We didn’t miss a ton of serves, we played way better defense and our passing was better,” said head coach Chantale Riddle. “I actually changed a lot of positions so I thought we played really well. This is a big confidence booster and we’re going to take that into district,” said Riddle.

The Lady Colts return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1 as they take on Hondo High School at 5 p.m. in Hondo, NM
