The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team bested the Bears, 5-1, to take home the District 3/4 regular-season championship title with an undefeated 8-0 record.
NMMI's goals were scored by Daniel Dosmantes Urbina, Octvian Chavez, Nicholas Barcenas Barbieri, Javier Yepiez, and Jose Arsenal Mijares. Dosmantes and Chavez each collected an assist as well.
"It was a great team win for us today," said NMMI head coach John Barbour. "It always makes you feel good to be district champs, and going undefeated through district play makes it even better."
Next up for Barbour and his Colts will be the NMAA Class 1A-3A State Championships, slated to begin next week, with the NMAA seeding committee meeting this Sunday to determine the match-ups in the eight-team, single-elimination playoff bracket.
NMMI is currently listed at No. 4 overall in Class 1A-3A by the MaxPreps power-rankings system, but that is only one part of the formula for determining the seeds for the State Championships.
"I don't forsee us dropping out of the top four," continued coach Barbour, "but anything can happen. We'll put in our selections this evening and then we'll just have to watch on Sunday like everyone else."
A top-four seed would ensure a first-round game at home, before moving on to the semifinals and finals in Albuquerque and the UNM Soccer Complex.
