Broncos handle University of the Southwest JV, 104-43

New Mexico Military Institute took a quick pause from conference play as they hosted the University of the Southwest JV Sunday afternoon. With the 104-43 win, the Broncos improve to a 5-12 overall on the season.

H1

To open the contest, NMMI started with a 12-2 run in the first four minutes. David Popa opened the scoring as he nailed a three off an assist by Taye Williams. Up 10 the Institute was able to establish some offensive rhythm as they maintained over an 8-point lead over the next 10 minutes.

With just over eight minute remaining in the half, Mitchell Schooley gave the Broncos their biggest lead of with a bucket to give NMMI a 31-15 advantage. The Broncos closed out the half on an impressive 27-5 run as Jonah Lopez added to the lead with a triple. Making his presence felt in the paint, Siosiua Tu'akoi notched 11 first-half points with four rebounds to lead way for NMMI.

With a 28-point lead coming out of the half, the offensive show did not stop. In the first three minutes of the half, were able to jump out to a 57-20 lead with the help of a deep three by Williams. Up 37 points, NMMI kept the foot on the gas as they extended their lead to 45 points with 13 minutes left in the contest.

With a 71-26 advantage, the home squad continued to create stops on the defensive end and respond with a bucket almost every time down the court. NMMI was able to end the game on a 33-35 run to help secure the 104-43 victory Sunday afternoon.

Justin Bramao led all scorers with 14 points while Tu'akoi added 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. As a team, the Broncos finished shooting 73 percent from the field while going 11-15 at the free throw line. Williams led all players with six assists while NMMI held the Mustangs to just 28 percent shooting from the field, forcing 16 turnovers in the process.

NMMI will return to the court on Thursday, Jan.23 as they jump back into conference play when they host Midland College in the Cahoon Armory Gym at 6:00 p.m.
