Colts thrash Dexter High on senior night, 91-55

On Friday night, New Mexico Military Institute concluded the 2025 regular season with a 91-55 win over neighboring Dexter High. With the win, the Colts improve to 15-11 and end district play with a 4-2 record – enough to finish second in the district. With the loss, Dexter falls to 0-6 in district play with a 6-18 overall record.

Q1

With a rowdy crowd full of cadets, NMMI opened the game on an impressive 14-4 run. Of the 14 points, Lorenzo Peral found his grove early as he tallied six early points in the opening run. However, Dexter didn’t let the score phase them.

The visiting team cut into the lead as they were able to make it an 18-16 ball game after Matthias Salas knocked down a pair of free throws. With the help of 12 first-quarter points by Peral, the Colts ended the opening period with a 22-16 advantage.

Q2

To open the second quarter, Sawyer Hull drilled a three to extend the Colt lead to nine points. Struggling to find momentum in the second quarter, NMMI allowed their lead to vanish as the game was knotted at 30 with 3:44 left in the half.

After not scoring in the first quarter, Mihail Parada made his presence felt in the second period as he tallied 11 points in the period. Parada tallied six of the final eight points of the quarter for the Colts as they enjoyed a 40-34 lead at the half.

Q3

After scoring 40 points in the first 16 minutes of action, the Colt offense came to life in the third quarter. Seven different scorers tallied a bucket for NMMI as they blasted out to a 30-point lead. Helping the cause, Xavier Johnson scored eight points in the quarter as the Colts used the eight minutes to conduct a 35-8 run.

Hull and Parada each also scored six points in the period as they home team entered the final quarter with a commanding 73-45 lead.

Q4

Up by 28, the Colts continued their high-powered offense as they used the final period to add 18 more points to the total. In the final quarter, Samuel McCargish tallied seven points to lead the way for the Colts. NMMI allowed just 10 points in the final eight minutes of action as they cruised to a 91-55 victory to end the regular season.

Head Coach Connor Williamson on tonight’s win, “It’s our first district home win, on senior night it feels good,” Williamson said. With every player who saw action scoring, Williamson was pleased with the effort the team displayed, “If you look at the box score it’s a well-rounded effort, everybody got some tonight … that’s the sign of a good team,” Williamson said.

Mihail Parada led all Colts with 19 points, on 9-for-12 shooting with nine rebounds in 15 minutes of action. Lorenzo Peral finished with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, 13 assists and six steals.

The Colts return to action on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the district tournament, as they take on the winner between Ruidoso and Dexter High in the Cahoon Armory Gym, with times still to be determined.
