On Saturday evening, New Mexico Military Institute claimed the 31st Annual Sertoma Colt Classic Tournament Championship – 11th overall, with an impressive 9-0 win over the Goddard JV squad. With the win, the Colts improve to 6-4 as they head into district play.
Tegin Maloney got the start on the mound for the Colts, opening his start with a pair of strikeouts to set the tone early on. In the home half of the first, the Colts scored a run as Nicolas Barcenas stole home from third base. In the second inning, NMMI scored off an RBI double by Caden Carter in the fourth at-bat of the inning. Tegin Maloney followed the double with a triple before scoring with an RBI single by Nicolas Barcenas to put the Colts ahead 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Colts loaded the bags before Javier Yepiz smashed one to center field, which scored four runs as Yepiz reached home to put NMMI in control 8-0. Grant Maloney stole home to add a run before Bear Lindsey was caught stealing second.
Coming into pitch for the final two innings, Konstatino Scopelitis secured the championship as he shut out the final six batters all in a row to give NMMI the 9-0 win.
In five innings of work, Tegin Maloney allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters in the process. At the plate, he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Head Coach Brad Blackwell on the win, “All our guys came ready to play with a lot of confidence. After losing to this team in last year’s semi final these guys didn’t want that to happen again tonight. All the seniors stepped up and I couldn’t have asked for a better overall team performance. We were aggressive on the bases and it really opened up opportunities for other hitters to get hits and move runners,” Blackwell said.
