On Monday evening, New Mexico Military Institute suffered a 53-36 loss against Dexter High in the district tournament Quarterfinal. With the loss, NMMI concludes the 2025 season with a 3-13 overall record. With the win, Dexter improves to 17-10 and book a spot in the district tournament semifinal.
Q1
In the fourth meeting this year between the two schools, Dexter opened the game on an early run to take control. However the Lady Colts did not shy away. Kaytlyn Lackey was the only Lady Colt to find the basket in the first quarter as she tallied all nine points for NMMI as they fought back to make it a 10-9 deficit after the first eight minutes of action.
Q2
Down by one, NMMI attempted to get in the game. Dexter was solid on both ends as they used the second quarter to conduct a 20-9 run in the eight minutes. Of those nine points for NMMI, Carolina Meza drilled a pair of threes while Jadyn Wade added a basket for the Lady Colts.
Q3
Coming out the halftime break the Lady Colts established some rhythm. NMMI found their defensive grove as they allowed Dexter to just six points in the period. With a press, the Lady Colts forced multiple turnovers to get back in the game. In the quarter, NMMI outscored Dexter 14-6.
Lackey tallied seven points in the third, as she knocked down a three. Adding to the mix, Sofia Barreras scored five points in the quarter while drilling a three from deep. After being down double-digits at the half, NMMI made it a 36-30 ball game heading into the final period.
Q4
In the final quarter, Dexter used the clock to their advantage. The Lady Colts were outscored 17-4 in the final eight minutes of action. The Colts were unable to stop the inside scoring as Dexter scored most of their points in the fourth inside the paint. Scoring half of the points in the fourth for NMMI, Nevaeh Clark added a basket to make it the eventual 53-36 score line.
Head Coach Lawrence Hall on the 2025 season, “we battled adversity this year no doubt. The one thing that was consistent is that we got better every game,” Hall said. “I’m excited for what the future holds … I’m very proud of the Lady Colts, this team has a lot of potential,” Hall said.
Kaytlyn Lackey led the Lady Colts with 18 points, scoring nine of those in the opening period.
