Broncos upset No. 11 Cisco College 20-5

Broncos upset No. 11 Cisco College 20-5

On Saturday afternoon, New Mexico Military Institute knocked off No.11 Cisco College 20-5 on the road at Chesley Stadium. With the win the Broncos improve to 3-3 overall with a 2-2 mark in conference play.

Q1

After a punt on both offenses' first drive of the game, the Broncos used just four plays to move the ball 53 yards  behind three completions by Elliot Paskett-Bell with his third pass connecting with Kendall Jones from 25 yards out. The Broncos took the 7-0 lead after converting the extra point.

Trying to answer back, Cisco College attempted throwing the ball on the first play of the drive but the NMMI defense came up with their first interception of the game as Daylan Chichester picked off Landon Vessel to put the Bronco offense back on the field.

Taking over at the Cisco 25 yardline, the Broncos used a nine yard scramble by Paskett-Bell to set up a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Zahir Favors to extend the Bronco lead to 14-0.

After using almost seven minutes off the clock, the Wranglers moved the ball more than 60 yards but the NMMI defense forced a field goal to make it a 14-3 ballgame.

Q2

The Broncos opened the second quarter using over five minutes as they gained enough yards for a 41 yard field goal attempt, which was drilled through the middle by Jack Nelson to put NMMI back up 17-3.

The Wranglers tried moving the ball down field with a pass but Rayden Aphayvong had other ideas as he snagged the intended pass in the air to secure the second NMMI defensive interception of the half. The half would end with punts by both teams as the score was 17-3 in favor of the Broncos heading into halftime.

Q3

Both teams struggled to find rhythm early in the second half as there were three punts and an interception on the first four drives of the half.

Taking over with eight minutes to go on the clock, the NMMI offense picked up five first downs and drove the ball into the red zone but Cisco was able to force another field goal attempt. Nelson drilled the attempt from the 11yardline to give the Broncos a 20-3 lead.

As the Broncos forced another punt, Cisco was able to down the ball at the two yard line. After a run attempt gained a couple yards, the Wranglers were able to tackle Jake South in the end zone for a safety to make it a 20-5 ballgame.

Q4

In the final quarter, Cisco College drove the ball into NMMI territory looking to score. However, the Bronco defense would come up with yet another takeaway as Damon Mayberry punched the ball out on the 10 yard line and secured the third takeaway for the defensive unit.

The next four drives for both teams combined resulted in four punts as both defenses were not willing to give an inch or give up any points to the opposition.

As the Broncos took the field with a 20-5 lead and 7:01 left on the clock the offense drained the clock as they picked up five first downs with three of them being picked up through the air. After Cisco stalled the drive, the Broncos attempted a 49 yard field goal which fell short.

After forcing a three and out on defense the Broncos took over with three seconds left as they ended the game in victory formation by kneeling the last play to secure the 20-5 upset.

Head coach Oliver Soukup was pleased with how the offense was able to control the tempo of the game, "It was awesome in terms of ball control and getting first downs. Sometimes points and time off the clock is better than points if we don't allow the other offense on the field," Soukup said. "I think both sides of the ball came off well and we responded early in the game which was huge," Soukup said.

The Broncos return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 19 as they host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at 2 p.m. for homecoming weekend.
