After going 1-1-1 in initial pool-play on Friday morning, the Lady Colt varsity volleyball team earned a four-set win over Hondo Valley HS in the afternoon's opening match of bracket play at the 2021 Gateway Christian Lady Warrior Invitational.

The Institute took the first two sets in convincing fashion against the Eagles: 25-12 and 25-20. In the third, NMMI trailed by as much as eight before making a late come-back attempt, but fell 25-23. The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair with the Colts serving up the last five points to get the match win.

"I saw lots of good things today," said NMMI's first-year head coach Violeta Konculic. "Lots of improvement, but also a lot of the same errors. We know what we've got to do tomorrow against Mescalero - it's going to take the entire team - and I think the girls are ready."

That second-round match against Mescalero Apache HS is slated for 8:30 am tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the tournament championship at 4:30 pm. The loser will play in the match for 3rd place at 2:30 pm.
