The Lady Colt volleyball team dropped their home opener to the visiting Elida Tigers in three sets: 25-21, 25-6, 25-18.

NMMI came into the match with a 1-1 record, downing Jal in three sets on the road to start the season, before losing at Tatum, 3-0.

The Tigers boasted a 3-1 overall record with three straight wins after an opening loss to Logan. That last win was against a common opponent, Tatum, whom they bested 3-2.

“We have the pieces to be successful,” said NMMI’s second-year head coach Chantale Riddle after Tuesday's match in the Godfrey Athletic Center. “We just need to put those pieces together in our puzzle. We also need to find some glue to keep that puzzle together, whether that’s from the leadership of our senior libero [Ashlynn Irish], from me as the coach, or somewhere else – we just need to find that glue. We have the girls that can do it, we’re just not putting our skills to use.”

“We were nervous – it was our first home game,” coach Riddle continued. “And we have a lot of young players. We’ll just need to teach them to relax and go out there and have fun. I think in the middle of the season, we’ll be a completely different team as we continue to mature and get more comfortable.”

The Lady Colts will have several matches this week to try and work on putting – and keeping – that team puzzle together: They’ll be back at home on Thursday, Sept. 7 for a 6:00 pm match against Mescalero Apache, then head over to the west of town for a two-day tournament at Gateway Christian on Friday and Saturday.
