The Lady Colt volleyball team (1-1) were defeated in four sets by the Lady Eagle (1-1) team of Hondo Valley – 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 – in the Godfrey Athletic Center on the New Mexico Military Institute campus.

The Lady Colts were down 2-3 early in Set 1 when they strung a 6-0 run to give them an 8-3 lead. Hondo answered right back with a 3-0 run themselves to make the set 8-7. The teams battled back and forth until the Lady Colts managed to end the first set with a 3-0 run to give them the 25-23 victory.

In the second set Hondo Valley started on a 3-1 run to give them an early lead. NMMI was able to get the score back to within one (9-10) before another Hondo Valley rally gave them a 14-9 lead. The Lady Colts battled back to take the lead 17-16, but couldn’t hold it, losing Set 2, 23-25.

The third set started in similar fashion, with Hondo Valley jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Lady Colts then served up an 8-1 run to make the score 9-5.

At 14-12 in the Institute’s favor, Hondo Valley went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-14 lead. NMMI retook the lead late in the set 22-21, but the Lady Eagles finished out the set with four straight points to give them a 25-22 victory.

NMMI started with an 8-1 lead in set four. The Lady Eagles would tie the set 16-16 then end on a 9-2 run to end the set 25-18 and the match.

Lady Colt head coach Stephanie Schooley was not sure what happened between this week and last week when the Institute downed the Eagles in Hondo in three straight sets.

Said Schooley “After beating Hondo Valley in three sets last week maybe we over looked them a little bit.”

Schooley said this game was a learning experience for her young team for their next match. Schooley also stressed the importance of staying focused on communication and getting the ball over the net.

“We need to communicate more on the floor than we are right now. I would rather hear the girls talk too much than not enough.” Schooley said, “We had a lot of confusion between who was going to hit the ball over the net on the third hit.”

Up next for the Lady Colts is a match against Gateway Christian (1-0) on Thursday, August 30th at 5:30, again at the Godfrey Athletic Center on the NMMI campus.
