Randy Montoya was already a well-known, successful coach in the Pecos Valley when he came from Hagerman to take over the helm of the Colt football team in 2011.

As head coach of the Bobcats from 2007-2011, he took Hagerman to the Class 1A state championship in 2009, finished as state runner-up in 2010 and made it to the state semifinals in 2007 and 2008.

He was named Coach of the Year in District 2-1A in 2009-2010, and was the recipient of the 2010 Chaves County Character Counts Coach of the Year award.

With NMMI, Montoya took his team to the state playoffs in 2011 and 2013-2015. Playing in 4A, the Colts finished in the top 10 during 2014-15 season.

Montoya also coached track at both NMMI (2011-2015) and Hagerman (2007-2011). The Colt track team won back-to-back District 7-2A championships in 2013 and 2014, taking third at state in 2013 and fifth in 2014. In 2012, he coached Chris Otero to a 2A state title in discus.

He was named Associate Athletic Director at NMMI during the 2014-2015 school year.

Prior to coaching at Hagerman, he was the freshman football coach at Goddard High School from 2006-2007. Randy served as an assistant football coach, alongside his father, Joe Montoya, at Mesa Middle School from 2005-2006.

He also coached boys and girls basketball and track at Mesa.

As a player, Montoya played football for Goddard High School, helping his team to the 1997 Class 4A state championship. He played in the 1999 4A North/South All-Star football game. He then went on to play football for four years at Eastern New Mexico University while earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

He was a part of the 1999 and 2000 teams that were co-champions of the Lone Star Conference South, and earned second-team All-LSC at fullback and first-team All-Academic honors.

Montoya is married to Sonya and has a son, Isaiah, and daughter, Aniston.
