Broncos shine in season opener

On Thursday evening in Roswell the NMMI Bronco basketball team opened up their 2017-18 season with a win over Northern New Mexico College JV, 150-72.

Usually the Broncos open up their season at the Thunderbird Classic in Hobbs, NM but head Coach Ralph Davis wanted to try something different this year.

Davis said, "In junior college basketball you are allowed to start on November 1st, but we decided we wanted to get some excitement going before the tournament."

Excitement is exactly what the crowd received.

Trevelin Queen, who has already committed to Division I Western Kentucky University for next season, made his NMMI debut and did not disappoint.

Queen had 37 points to finish the game, despite sparingly in the second half.

Another key player in tonight's victory was Rosel Hurley, who added 25 points in the blowout over NNMC.

David said, "We came out and played hard most importantly, but it was great having the football players and the rest of the cadets coming out to show us support. We are excited about this win, but we have a quick turnaround tomorrow in Hobbs."

NMMI is scheduled to play Jacksonville College at 4:00 PM MDT in the first round of the Thunderbird Classic.
