The New Mexico Military Institute Colt basketball team used a strong first period to push past visiting Dexter High School for their first district win of the season, 60-44.

Thre Institute went on a 10-0 run to start the game, nailing five of their first six shots from the field, winning the opening quarter, 12-4.

The second and third stanzas were close affairs, but the Colts took those as well – 13-11 and 14-13 – for an 11-point lead heading into the fourth.

The Demons made a 5-0 run to start the final period, making it a 6-point game, 41-33, with 7:23 remaining, but four straight buckets by the Colts – including a timely three by junior guard Xavier Johnson – gave NMMI a 15-point safety margin, 48-33 with 6:02 left on the clock.

All but one Colt players put points on the board, with three earning double-digits in scoring: Cole Seidenberger with a game-high 16 points, and Sawyer Hull and Lorenzo Peral each with 10.

Seidenberger was also a beast on the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds.

Steven Griego was NMMI's assist leader with four, and Jacob Hayes snagged the steals title with five.

"We're just trying to get better every game," said NMMI head coach Connor Williamson. "We had a really good team performance tonight - a lot of guys contributed. Cole was an animal with a huge double-double, but it was definitely a team effort. Just a good win for Colt basketball."

The 'W' puts NMMI's record back on the winning side at 11-10 overall and puts their district record at 1-2 with three more district match-ups remaining: at Ruidoso on Friday, Feb. 16; back at home vs. Tucumcari on Tuesday, Feb. 20; then a rematch on the road against Dexter on Friday, Feb. 23.
