Colts make quick work of Loving, 57-7

Everything seemed to click for the New Mexico Military Institute boys’ basketball team.

After beginning the game on an 11-0 run, the Colts made quick work of the Loving Falcons with a 57-7 victory Tuesday evening at the Godfrey Athletic Center.

NMMI led 15-1 with 3:06 in the opening quarter. The Colts landed three 3-pointers in the first frame from Jaikayo Brown, Daniel Xibille and Juan Ruelas.

Loving was held to two free throws by Giovanni Ruiz and Moe Trevino.

The Falcons did not score again until the fourth quarter when they put up five points, which included their lone field goal of the contest that came in the form of a three-pointer by Hunter Hernandez.

Xibille tallied nine points in the second quarter to help extend NMMI’s lead to 35 points at halftime. He had 14 points at the break.

With a running clock in play, the Colts recorded eight points in the third frame to lead by 43 to start the fourth quarter.

The Colts got a big contribution from Nolan Otis in the second half as he tallied nine points. Otis finished with 13 for the game as he made six shots in the paint.

NMMI outscored Loving 12-5 in the final quarter to put the finishing touches on the contest.

Xibille led all scorers with 21 points while Ricardo Mata added six, all tallied in the first half.

Carlen Hailey and Jose Donnadieu each chipped in with four points.

The Colts shot 5 for 7 from the charity stripe.

Four of Loving’s total points came off free throws. The Falcons shot 4 for 11 from the free throw line.

This is one of three home games for the Colts as they’ll hit the road for Tucumcari to begin District 4-3A play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday before taking on Ruidoso at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
