Broncos dust Westerners 3-1, face NMJC next

The top-seeded Broncos downed fourth-seeded Western Texas College 3-1 Friday afternoon at the Region V Tournament to extend their stay in Weatherford, Texas another day with two more familiar foes between themselves and an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division-I National Championships.

For the third time this season, the Broncos defeated their WJCAC rival in four sets with the lone losing frame coming by the closest allowable margin of two points. The scrappy Westerners from Snyder have played NMMI tougher than most conference opponents, but in the final set on Friday, the Broncos ran away 25-9.

Sophomores Leah Linares and Vitoria Oliveira bounced back from Thursday's disappointing loss to Odessa College and freshmen Fuka Sekita and Allison Miller played stingy defense as the Institute advanced in the runner-up bracket with two more wins required to snag the remaining bid to nationals. The first auto-bid was secured by host Weatherford with their 3-1 win over Odessa in the championship game Friday night.

If NMMI can top NMJC for a third time this season at 11 a.m., they'll take on Odessa for a fourth time with the winner punching their ticket to Hutchinson, Kansas on Nov. 16.
