HOBBS — The Colt tennis teams split with 5A Hobbs in a dual match Tuesday, with the Lady Colts winning 6-3 over the Eagles, while the boys fell 7-2.

“They did really good, and it’s not often our girls can go toe-to-toe with a big school,” coach John Barbour said of the girls. “So we’re really proud of our girls and the job they did.”

The match started with doubles.

No. 3  Chimemerile Amechi and Ralaya Martinez won their match 6-2, 6-2 while No. 2 Minnie DeGroot and Lauren Leonard lost a tough three-set match. 

No. 1 doubles Morgan Lynch and Jasmine Munoz then battled the Eagles to a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 win, putting NMMI up 2-1 going into singles.

Martinez, No. 6, and Munoz, No. 4, took easy wins while DeGroot and Leonard lost at Nos. 2 and 3.

“Then we really just needed one more, and Amechi won hers which solidified everything,” Barbour said. “But at No. 1, Morgan Lynch was just having a knock-down, drag-out match. It was just back and forth. It was a really tough one. So we’re really glad she got hers.”

Amechi went to three sets, losing 3-6 before coming back 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Lynch fought for every point, finally winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

“The girls did really well,” the coach said.

The Colts had a somewhat tougher time.

“Their boys are pretty good and we’ve got a couple who are missing so we were a little depleted today. We still should have done better,” Barbour said. “I was happy that our No. 1 doubles won, as well as Dakota (Gibson) won handily at No. 1 as well.”

Gibson took his match 6-3, 6-3 after combining with Joseph Liperts to win at doubles, 7-5, 7-5.
