The Colt and Lady Colt track and field teams met 15 other squads Friday for the Roswell Independent School District’s Early Bird Meet at the Wool Bowl.

With other winter and spring sports active, NMMI didn’t have its full contingent of athletes on hand for the first meet of the season, but two of last year’s best were present to begin their renewed attempts at winning state gold.

Senior Kassandra Carpignano finished seventh out of 46 in the girls discus finals with a mark of 85 feet, 9 inches, the highest finish in the event for a Class 3A athlete. Carpignano has already vastly improved on her 11th place finish at last year’s state meet where she tossed for 73 feet, 11 inches.

Junior Cale Taylor took ninth out of 21 runners in the boys 1600 meter race, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:28.99, about 40 seconds behind the winner from Hobbs.

Junior Cohen Tomasits finished 13th out of 41 long jumpers with a distance of 18 feet, 8 inches and sophomore Fidel Mukeh, who took sixth at the 2023 state meet, finished 24th.
