Bronco Tennis competes at Nationals

The Bronco Tennis team completed their run at the 2023 NJCAA Men's Nationals in McKinney, Texas today as the two remaining NMMI players were defeated in the consolation semifinals.

After falling in the first round to a seventh-seeded player from Meridian CC on Monday, sophomore Raul Davalos won his round of 32 consolation match against Abhinav Acharya from Prairie State 8-2, drew a bye past the round of 16 and then defeated Chris Albert of Northwest Mississippi CC 8-2 in the quarterfinals.

In today's semifinal, Davalos fell to Mathis Collignon of South Carolina-Sumter 8-2.

Sophomore Sebastian Soto and Davalos lost in the first round of doubles competition 6-0, 6-1 to the team from Meridian, but bounced back in the consolation bracket, downing Coastal Alabama CC 9-8 (5) before getting knocked out of the semifinals by Prairie State.

In singles competition, Soto went down in straight sets in the first round to a seeded player from Barton CC, then fell in consolation play 8-3 to Luke Oliver of Bevill State CC.

Sophomore Sameer Jain was defeated in the first round 6-2, 6-0 by Paradise Valley CC, then fell in his first consolation match 8-1 to Will McCullough of Meridian.

Freshman team captain Carel Van der Merwe lost to Jacob Runnels of Hinds CC 6-0, 6-0, then lost his consolation match 8-0 against Duncan Mulenga of Mesa CC.

Van der Merwe and Jain lost their first doubles match in straight sets, then lost the consolation quarterfinal 8-0 against NW Mississippi.
