The Bronco Golf team competed at the RJGA Cactus Thaw at Painted Dunes Golf Course in El Paso, Texas this past Monday and Tuesday, finishing fourth as a team, with sophomore Jackson Hicks finishing third individually.

The 36-hole tourney was hosted by Western New Mexico University and featured seven junior college teams, including conference rivals and national contenders Odessa and New Mexico Junior College.

Hicks shot an even 72 in the first round to sit tied for seventh place on Monday before shaving one stroke from his score on Tuesday for a 1-under 71, moving him up to tie for third place.

"I kind knew I didn't have my A-game coming into it. Wasn't hitting the ball that good. But I was happy with the way I persevered and stayed confident and positive, and that's all that matters," said Hicks. "T-third, first tournament of the year? Not mad about it at all."

Sophomore Phalatphon Viboonviriyasakul shot a 76 in the first round but rebounded on Day 2 for to shoot par and move up 10 spots to finish tied for 10th. Sophomore Thavichakree Arunmala stayed consistent, shooting a 3-over 75 both days to finish tied for 16th with sophomore teammate Aden morales, who climbed four spots on the leaderboard on Day 2.

Hicks said the NMMI six-man team of mostly sophomores has great team chemistry and he sees a successful 2024 spring season on the horizon.

"We have five sophomores and one freshman, and we love the freshman, he's a really good guy," he said. "We're all pretty close, we like our coaches and I think as long as everyone does their job we'll make it to nationals with no trouble."

Hicks individually qualified for the NJCAA Division I National Championship tournament in 2023, one of only six solo players to punch their ticket, and was in the top 10 through three rounds before rough weather derailed his final round, dropping him to a 32nd place finish.

"Getting back to nats is one of my biggest personal goals, but I want my team there," he said. "Winning a tournament as a team is a big goal. Still some things we need to work on, but the first tournament of the year was a good lesson and I think we're ready for what's coming our way."

Up next for the Broncos is the Tanklogix Intercollegiate hosted by Midland College at the Ranchland Hills Golf Club in Midland, Texas on Monday, March 11.
