The Broncos tipped off the 2024 Western Junior College Athletic Conference slate with a 79-51 home loss to the visiting Howard Hawks Monday night at Cahoon Armory.

Freshman point guard Donald Chapman was the only Bronco to score double-digit points, netting 10. Half his points came from the free-throw line. The Milwaukee product also pulled down five rebounds.

Freshman forward Leslie Okafor, freshman guard Mazin Lumori and sophomore forward Donovan Long each chipped in eight points.

Four players scored in double figures for the Hawks, with sophomore wing Joey Madimba leading all scorers with 21.

Much like the pair of last weekend's games against Strength N Motion, the Broncos played sloppy down the stretch and turned the ball over 10 times in the second half.

NMMI outrebounded Howard 36-28, but few of the Broncos 15 offensive boards were converted into points as the Institute shot 31 percent from the field, 23 percent from behind the arc and 67 percent from the charity stripe.

The road doesn't get any easier for the young Broncos as they travel to Levelland, Texas to take on the top team in the NJCAA, the No. 1 South Plains College Texans, at 7:30 p.m. CST on Thursday. The next home game is next Monday at 6:30 p.m. MST against the 2-10 Frank Phillips College Plainsmen.
