A comeback and continued big bats helped NMMI sweep a two-game series vs. visiting University of the Southwest on Wednesday, 13-12 and 15-3.

NMMI had to rally get back in Game 1, trailing 9-0 after three and a half innings of play.

But the Bronco bullpen stopped most of the bleeding, allowing just three more runs over the next three stanzas, and the Bronco bats finally got hot, collecting nine hits and 13 runs over their final four halfs at the plate.

Owen Alsup blasted a three-run shot, well over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth, as part of a six-run rebound.

Edrien Martinez got the walk-off single to wrap up the win in the bottom of the seventh, plating Rhett Stokes from third with one out. He also had a two-run dinger an inning earlier to put NMMI within one run, 11-10.

NMMI starting pitcher Marc Rios threw two shut-out innings in the first and third, but gave up a six-spot in the second; Luis Patron gave up three runs in relief in the fourth but pitched a goose-egg fifth; and Diego Jimenez got the win despite allowing three runs over the final six-out stretch.

In Game 2, the Mustangs again got on the board first with a trio of runs against Institute starter Jackson Peters. But after that, the slinging staff allowed just three more hits, and more importantly, no more runs. Julio Ramos and Leandro Tamaki combined for the five-inning shut-out - Ramos striking out six and allowing two hits over three innings, Tamaki with one K and one hit in the final two.

NMMI's swingers stayed sizzling, scoring runs in every stanza save the fifth: two in the first, five in the second, one in the third, another pair in the fourth, and a fiver in the sixth.

Alsup went 4-for-5 in the nightcap, after a perfect 3-for-3 stint in the opener; B.Y. Choi had a three-run homer as part of his five-RBI performance in Game 2; Martinez plated four more runs, incluidng another two-run rip to right; and Adolfo Rondon tallied his first tater, a solo shot back in the bottom of the fourth to put NMMI up 8-3.

"We scored a lot of runs, but we left some pitches over the heart of the plate" said a relieved head coach Chris Cook after the twinbill. "We've got to be better than that on the mound. Some of our bullpen arms did pretty well and we got some guys in that needed a little work. Ramos threw well. Jimenez was a little off but he's only threw one inning this year because of his shoulder. And offensively, Owen [Alsup] was locked in today and had some really good at-bats."

"We've got to just get back to work," finished coach Cook. "Luna on Tuesday, and then try and get ready for our opening conference games at Amarillo on Friday and Saturday."

With the wins, NMMI moves to 17-1 on the season.
