Colts rally against Ruidoso to remain undefeated in district

The New Mexico Military Institute Colt baseball team plated seven runs in their last two at-bats to surge past the visititng Ruidoso Warriors on Tuesday, 8-3.

Ruidoso struck first in the single seven-inning district match-up, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second, thanks to a pair of multiple-base hits and an NMMI error.

The Colts made it a one-run ballgame in the bottom of the third. Tegin Maloney tripled into the gap in right-center with one out, and came home on a ground-out RBI  by Luis Patron.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Warriors put the tally back to two, 3-1, again thanks in part to an Institute error.

But in the bottom half of the fifth, the Colts collected a trio of runs off of four base hits. Edmundo Briseno started the rally with a lead off single; Maloney went opposite field with a double into left, scoring Briseno; Patron singled on a ground ball down the third base line putting runners at the corners; and Miguel Rivera tripled past the centerfielder to clear the bases and give NMMI their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Starting Colt pitcher Maloney - 10 strikouts in 5 innings with just two walks and one earned run - turned the ball over to relviever Rivera in the top of the sixth with one on. Rivera allowed just one hit, no walks, no runs, and three Ks to close out the last two innings of the game.

NMMI added a four-spot of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth off a pair of walks, two singles, a double and an error. 

Maloney, Briseno and Patron all had a multiple-hit game for the Colts. Maloney went 3-for-3 with three runs, a double, triple, a  wlak  and three RBIs. Briseno was 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI. Patron was 2-for-4 wit ha runs scored and an RBI.

With the win, the Colts keep their perfect district record intact at 6-0, and and overall record of 15-1.

Next up for NMMI will be a district doubleheader in Albuquerque on Saturday, April 15 against Sandia Prep - start time for the first game slated for 11:00 am MDT.
