Shelby Forchtner has been with NMMI her entire coaching career.

A Roswell native, she graduated from Goddard High School in 1996, where she played for the Rocket volleyball team. She then attended Seward County Community College, where she played for the Jayhawk Conference championship team in 1999-2000, earning All-Region performer honors.

The Saints won the NJCAA Regional tournament both years and finished fifth-ranked nationally in 2000 with a 48-6 record.

Forchtner then went on to play for Lubbock Christian University, earning NAIA National Setter of the Week and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American awards in 2000, and in 2001, helped the  Chaparrals make the NAIA National Tournament.

She graduated from LCU in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree, and, in 2003, came to NMMI as an assistant coach of the Bronco volleyball team. In 2006, she became the Bronco head coach, where, during her 14-year term at NMMI, she has coached five NJCAA All-Americans; 37 All-Region V selections; 66 WJCAC All-Conference selections; seven WJCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention selections; and two All-Conference MVPs.      

The Lady Broncos have been to the Region V tournament 14 times in the program’s 15-year history, winning it 4 times in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 to make the NJCAA National Championship Tournament.

In 2017,  Forchtner led the Broncos to the highest finish in program history where they finished 3rd at the NJCAA D1 National Championships.

She is married to Bronco head football coach Joe Forchtner, and has two daughters, Macy and Bentley, and a son, Jay.
