The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team defeated the Roswell High Coyotes 1-0 at NMMI Stapp Parade Field on Tuesday.

The Colts looked in mid-season form as they slowly increased the pressure against the Coyotes during the first half. NMMI got four good looks in the first half, but could not convert on their opportunities.

The Colts were able to capitalize on a chance in the 53rd minute with Joseph Benedict scoring a goal goal, assisted by John Zimmerman - this gave the Colts the lead and the eventual victory in their opening game.

Head Colt soccer coach John Barbour was pleased with the team’s victory.

“The team looked good out there this evening for their first game. We are trying to get better every day and as long as we focus on doing that, I think we will win a lot of games this year. I think we have the depth to do well and I’m looking forward to a very successful season.

Last year’s assistant Colt soccer coach, David Sifuentes, is now the head coach at Roswell High this season.

Coach Barbour said, “I wish nothing but the best for Coach Sifuentes and Roswell High. They will be a tough team this year.”

The Colts next match will be in Portales as they face the Rams on Saturday, Aug. 24th at 3 PM.
