Colts go to Championship game on shootout

The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team will be going to the State Championship match after defeating the Sandia Prep Sundevils 1-0 (7-6 shootout) at Bernalillo soccer complex on Thursday.

After both teams could not score a goal in regulation or in the two overtimes the Sundevils and Colts went into a shootout. In the round of five shootout both teams scored four goals. The four goal scorers for NMMI were Andres Bleizeffer, Jose Donnadieu, Leonardo Reyes, and Daniel Angulo. In the second round of the shootout the Colts got goals from Quan Nguyen, Kunal Camp, and Juan Padilla. The match ended on a diving save by goal keeper Allen Varela to send the Colts to the State Championship.

“Evenly matched game all the way through,” said head Colt soccer coach John Barbour. “It was a chess match with some cat – and – mouse between the two really good teams. We are going to get our guys ready to go for tomorrows match.”

The Colts will play #8 St. Michael’s at 1:00 PM in Bernalillo Soccer Complex on Friday.
