The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team fell to the Roswell High JV 4-2 on opening day of the Coyote Classic played at Celo Grande Park Friday.

The young Coyotes scored two goals in the first half of play before NMMI got on the board on a goal by Francisco Vazquez to narrow the gap to 2-1 as the half ended.

Roswell scored one goal in the second half before NMMI scored their second goal of the match off the boot of Mario Camou to bring the match back to within one as the Colts trailed 3-2.

The Coyotes scored one more goal towards the end of regulation to give them the victory.

Even though the Colts didn't win, coach John Barbour said his team keeps getting better.

“We had some positive play today going to the outside part of the field and scored a couple of goals tonight from the game plan,” he said.

He also commented on improvements for the team going forward.

“We made some errors on the defensive side," Barbour said. "We need to make sure we are covering for each other on defense. These guys are still getting to know one another on the pitch."

The Colts will play tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Celo Grande Park for their next game in the Coyote Classic.
